Matt Every, who was once ranked as high as number 40 in the world golf rankings, has called on the US PGA Tour and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) to allow athletes to use cannabis for medicinal purposes without the fear of repercussions.
The public statement comes after he was suspended for 12 weeks last year after testing positive for drug abuse against the current tour regulations regarding marijuana.
Every recently came forward and revealed the suspension related to a legal prescription he has in Florida for medicinal marijuana to treat a mental health condition.
He was also disappointed more consideration isn’t being given to mental health conditions by WADA and the US PGA Tour.
Anxiety is a real thing and the way I treat it is the healthiest way possible for my body. But WADA doesn’t think so and the tour goes by what WADA says. It’s really silly, to be honest.
Surprisingly, under the current rules, penalties for using heroin and marijuana are exactly the same.
You could fail for heroin and marijuana and the penalty is the same. If anyone wants to make the argument that that is performance enhancing, they have never done it before.
Maybe one day in the near future, we’ll be watching golfers roll around the green with a few different sponsorships deals on their shirts.
